Scientist says the San Andreas fault is "locked, loaded, and ready to roll"
10:43:00 AM Unknown
California's San Andreas fault has been quiet for far too long and is overdue for a major earthquake, a leading geoscientist has announced. In a conference this week, the state was warned to prepare for a potential earthquake as strong as magnitude 8.0.
"The springs on the San Andreas system have been wound very, very tight. And the southern San Andreas fault, in particular, looks like it’s locked, loaded and ready to go," said Thomas Jordan, director of the Southern California Earthquake Centre.
Jordan gave his warning in the keynote talk of the annual National Earthquake Conference in Long Beach, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Here's why he's so worried: research has shown that the Pacific plate is moving northwest relative to the North American plate at a rate of around 5 metres (16 feet) every 100 years - and that's building up a whole lot of tension along the San Andreas fault line that needs to be relieved regularly.
But the last time southern California experienced a major shake-up was in 1857, when a magnitude 7.9 quake rupture almost 300 km (185 miles) between Monterey County and the San Gabriel Mountains.
Further south, areas of the fault line have been quiet even longer, with San Bernardino county not moving substantially since 1812, and the region near the Salton Sea remaining still since the late 1600s.
All of this means that there's a lot of tension underneath California right now. Last year, Jordan's team found there's a 7 percent chance the state will experience a magnitude 8.0 quake in the next three decades.
And that's a big problem. Back in 2008, a US Geological Survey report found that a magnitude 7.8 earthquake on the southern San Andreas fault could cause more than 1,800 deaths, 50,000 injuries, US$200 billion in damage, and long-lasting infrastructure disruptions - such as six months of compromised sewer systems and ongoing wildfires.
Even though Los Angeles isn't on the San Andreas fault line, simulations by the Southern California Earthquake Centre show that the shaking would quickly spread there:
According to their modelling, that size earthquake could cause shaking for nearly 2 minutes, said Jordan, with the strongest activity in the Coachella Valley, Inland Empire and Antelope Valley.
The reason Los Angeles is at so much risk is because it's built over a sedimentary basin, and the seismic waves spread and get trapped there to cause more extreme and longer-lasting shaking. As you can see in the magnitude 8.0 simulation:
While Jordan praised recent initiatives to earthquake retrofit buildings in LA, he warned that the rest of the state needs to get ready for the next big one, by making residents more aware of ways to stay safe during an earthquake and when and how to evacuate.
"We are fortunate that seismic activity in California has been relatively low over the past century," Jordan explained last year. "But we know that tectonic forces are continually tightening the springs of the San Andreas fault system, making big quakes inevitable

This ultra-thin 'electronic skin' turns your body into an LED screen
10:12:00 AM Unknown
If smartwatches and fitness trackers are the best we can do when it comes to wearables, stop the planet, I want off. Jupiter looks better anyway. But wait, I can turn my skin into an actual LED display? Okay fine, I’ll stay, because that sounds awesome.
Developed by researchers in Tokyo, Japan, these super-flexible electronic displays are the thinnest ever, at an incredible 3 micrometres thick. How thin is that, exactly? Oh about 0.003 mm - more than 13 times thinner than a human hair.
Not only are these the thinnest ever electronic displays embedded with minuscule LED lights that you can adhere to your skin, they’ve also overcome a bunch of really important challenges that made the rest of them less-than-viable for the actual market.
First off, these displays produce less heat than previous efforts - which is important when you’re applying them directly to your bare skin - and also use up less power, which means they can be used for longer stretches of time.
This 'electronic skin' is also way more durable than other versions for another reason, as Adi Robertson reports for The Verge: "One of the major problems with these kinds of light films in the past ... is the fact that they only lasted for a matter of hours when exposed to normal air."
The solution? Researchers from the University of Tokyo figured out that they could insert a special protective layer, called a passivation layer, into the display film, and not only does this hold everything together and prevent it from breaking or stretching too thin when you flex your skin, it also protects the components from the elements
"The coating kept out oxygen and water vapour well enough to keep a light working for 'several days'," says Robertson.
As the team reports in Science Advances, when an 'e-skin' with red and green lights and a sensor that can measure oxygen levels through the skin was laminated to a figure, it stayed illuminated and delivered measurements for four whole days.
The lights used in the displays are called organic polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs), which are small sheets of energy-efficient lights that turn off and on when exposed to an electrical pulse.
So other than the possibility of us running around in the future with obnoxious light-up tattoos - or maybe we’ll all just end up writing 8008135 on the wearable calculators we’ve stuck to the back of our hands as a very funny joke - how could this technology actually change our lives?
The most obvious use would be to replace fitness trackers and medical sensors to measure a person’s pulse, blood oxygen levels, and daily steps. Or they could literally turn our bodies into notice boards, which would be more useful than it sounds.
"A worker will be able to have building plans or an electrical diagram displayed on their skin without carrying heavy devices," one of the team, Takao Someya, told New Scientist.

10 Signs You Are Dating A Great Guy Who You Should Never Let Go
12:04:00 AM Unknown
Women all around the world agree that being in a relationship can bring a lot of delight and excitement into your life. There are many fish in the sea and the options are endless. For those ladies already in a relationship, you may wonder every once in a while whether you made the right choice by being with your significant other. What if there were some things you’ve neglected to consider? Is it time to rethink your options?
To put your mind at ease, here are a few signs that you are in fact dating a great guy who you should never let go.
1. He loves you for your dorky, awkward self
Not all girls can have as much confidence and grace as Marilyn Monroe. You may have an awkward laugh, or a weird way of walking. Maybe you stutter, tell bad jokes and drool in your sleep. Maybe you aren’t very comfortable around his friends and family, but at the end of every day he still finds you adorable. It’s the best feeling knowing that you don’t have to pretend you’re someone you’re not.
2. He doesn’t run for the hills during your period
Some situations can’t be fixed by anyone, not even by your number one man. Let’s use your time of the month as an example. He doesn’t know what it’s like, and a large percentage of women suffer mood swings and hormonal fluctuations that can be terrifying and confusing. He can’t be expected to know exactly what to say, however he will sit you down, wrap a blanket around you and give you a massage. What more could you ask for?
3. He’s more real than men from the movies
If he has ever tried surprising you with a song or other romantic gesture, more often than not it has ended up more embarrassing than romantic. However the gestures are flattering and prove to be topics of conversation for the rest of your relationship. Let’s face it, perfect guys don’t exist, so the fact that this imperfect guy can make you happy is an indicator that you’re probably with the right guy.
4. He never lets you go to bed angry or upset
All couples fight – it’s a given. Every relationship has its low points and its high points. In whatever case, it is great to have a man who makes sure you two don’t dwell on unnecessary arguments. There is nothing worse than waking up in the morning knowing that you had that fight last night and are supposed to be avoiding each other and exchanging glares the next morning. If he takes the extra effort to make sure you don’t fall asleep without making up, then you know he’s a keeper.
5. He isn’t too scared of your dad’s shotgun
Many men cringe at the thought of meeting your parents, especially if they’re the scary type. When your significant other is actually enthusiastic about meeting your folks and incorporating himself into your family, then this is a sign that you’ve picked a good one. A good boyfriend will never try to isolate you from your family, so be sure you look out for this.
6. He is the only person you need to have a good time
Whether you’re watching a movie, eating dinner, playing video games or just spending the whole day in bed talking about everything, he is the only person you need to have a memorable moment. Spending time with other people is great, but sometimes there’s nothing you love more than being able to spend some quality time alone with him. Your lives together will never be dull.
7. He doesn’t burn toast
Enough said. Maybe all he knows how to do is flip a pancake or not burn an omelet – on the other hand he might be a better cook than you. Either way, there is nothing more attractive than a guy who knows his way around the kitchen. While you still need to spend a few hours laboring in the kitchen, it’s good to know that he’s willing to put in as much effort as you.
8. He doesn’t doubt you, and doesn’t give you any reason to doubt him
Trust is the most important part of a functional relationship, and it is vital that both of you are putting in an equal amount of effort. If you can go out late on a Friday night without him hounding you with questions the morning after about where you were, what you did and who you were with, then you know you’ve established a good trust relationship. At the same time, he doesn’t give you any reason to question who he texts and why he hasn’t called when he said he would. Whatever excuse or apology he gives you is legitimate. This is a man you should keep around for as long as possible.
9. He has creative ways to let you know he loves you
It’s extremely easy to say those three little words – and after a long relationship it becomes something you say almost automatically, even if you don’t mean it. At this stage, if your boyfriend is finding more creative ways to let you know he cares, then this is the sign of a keeper. Maybe he’s started leaving cute notes for you to find when you wake up in the morning. Maybe he’s started singing to you. Maybe he’s taking you on picnics. Whatever he does, it should mean the world to you.
10. He doesn’t have multiple personalities
He doesn’t have to act ‘cool’ in front of his friends or your friends. He doesn’t pretend to be anything to impress your parents. He doesn’t have to act any differently around you to make you like him better. He’s the same person all the time—honest and consistent. You never have to worry whether he’ll act weird around particular people, and you know that the man your fell in love with such a long time ago will still be the same man in fifty years. This is a sign that you should never ever let him go.

The Warriors hit 73, make history, watch Steph Curry’s fireworks show, and finish up the best regular season of all time
9:26:00 AM Anonymous
They got to 73 audaciously, uproariously and from such deep distance that you wondered if Stephen Curry & Co. could even see the end goal from where they were on Wednesday.
They could see it, though, they always could. And they never let it go, did they?
The Warriors didn’t just break the NBA record by claiming their 73rd victory on Wednesday at Oracle Arena, they made the moment into a precious piece of art.
The 125-104 triumph over Memphis was one last Warriors regular-season masterpiece, with the playoffs set to start this weekend.
It took the last game of this long, astonishing season; it took one more remarkable onslaught by Curry; it took a public declaration weeks ago that they wanted this record, and it took fierce determination to get here.
At the end, it took your breath away, finally, and eternally.
“It means I’m part of the best team ever,” forward Draymond Green said, while holding the game ball tightly in his arms at the post-game podium.
And not many people can say that. Fifteen guys can say that.”
After the final buzzer, the Warriors players, coaches and staff members acted like this was the end of a playoff series, not a regular season.
They milled around on the court, hugged each other, waved to the crowd and soaked in the glee of 73.
This victory dethroned the 1995-1996 Chicago Bulls, led by none other than Michael Jordan, whose 72-10 record had served as the NBA’s greatest mark for 20 years.
Now the Warriors stand alone at 73-9, an almost unfathomable, impossible mark.
“I just told our guys I’d never in a million years would have guessed that that record would ever be broken,” said coach Steve Kerr, a member of that Bulls team.
“I thought it was like DiMaggio’s hit streak, really, and I was wrong.
“But I will say the same thing now that I said 20 years ago–I don’t think this one will ever be broken. Somebody’s got to go 74-8; I don’t see it, and I hope our fans aren’t expecting that next year.”
As a tribute to his old Bulls team, Kerr wore socks with Bulls Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen’s likeness on them, then Kerr showed them off after the game.
Beyond that, the Bulls were just an after-thought on this night; the Warriors were moving too fast and achieving too much to give Jordan, Pippen and all the rest much attention.
Beyond that, the Bulls were just an after-thought on this night; the Warriors were moving too fast and achieving too much to give Jordan, Pippen and all the rest much attention.
On Wednesday, of course, it was Curry who led the way–he needed to make eight three-pointers to get to 400 on the season, well more than 100 more than the record total of 286 he set only last season.
So Curry made his first three-pointer a few minutes into the game, then another soon after, then a 31-footer, then two more in rapid succession to give Curry six in the first period, and 397 on the season.
By the time No. 397 ripped through the net, the Oracle crowd was treating this like a titanic fireworks show–ooohs and aaahs and thunderous sounds of rapture.
And Curry’s teammates were riding along with it. After one spectacular Curry three-pointer, first Andrew Bogut then Green then Andre Iguodala came over to Curry to pay tribute to him.
Curry went into halftime needing only two one more to get 400 and two more to fly past it… and he made those two relatively quickly. He officially made No. 400 with 9:33 11:17 left in the third quarter.
And almost before the cheers had died down, Curry of course made No. 401.
During the next timeout, the Warriors put a graphic celebrating Curry’s 400 three-pointers on the giant video board… once again he was too quick for even the tributes.
Curry finished with 10 three-pointers on 19 attempts and 46 points overall–which guaranteed that his season average was over 30 points per game.
That gave him 402 three-pointers on the season, gave the Warriors the icing to the cake, and put this regular season into the record books, once and for all.
“There was a point maybe a week or two ago that I was worried that maybe we were extending ourselves a little bit too much,” Kerr said.
“But I think it’s fantastic that our guys followed it through and got it done and set the record. No matter what happens, this has been an incredible season.
“But it obviously takes on a different meaning if we go on and win the title, and that’s our focus now.”
The Warriors go into the playoffs as the defending champions, history-makers, and on this night, they were the most audacious, unprecedented thing we’ve seen.
Or maybe will ever see.

This Island In Japan That Is Filled With Thousands Of Rabbits Has A Dark Past. Here’s The Story
11:06:00 AM Anonymous
We all know the kind of atrocities and human rights abuses Japanese did in World War II. Volumes and volumes of books have been written on accounts of these violent actions throughout their conquests of the South East Asia and the Far East. But, very few people know that Japan, just like Nazi Germany and the USA itself, commissioned bioweapons and chemical weapon research centers to maintain their military dominance and threaten the areas under their control into complete submission. Typically, these centers were present on isolated islands where the scientists could have the freedom to perform the experiments of their liking. However, instead of using humans like the Nazis, the Japanese were content with experimenting on rabbits and finding out what kind of damage they can sustain.
Okunoshima was the main island where such research was being done by the Imperial Japanese scientists. It even housed a production facility to mass-produce the chemical weapons once they had perfected one. After the war, the place was boarded up, but the furry mammals were released out in the open. Rabbits did what they do best; reproduce and now the island is bustling with rabbits and so much that it has been named The Rabbit Island or Us agi Jima by the Japanese people and has become somewhat of a tourist spot where people go to enjoy the cute little things.
Stephanie Broekarts, an environmental sciences major from the Kyoto University, got to know about the little inhabitants of the island through a local friend and went there to capture some astonishing photography of the island.
Here is the Google map location of the facility. It was 2 Km away from the mainland and safe enough to conduct vile experiments. You can see the proximity of Hiroshima from here as well.
A photographer recently went to the island. After two train changeovers from Hiro station and Tadanoumi Station, the photographer got to the shore from where she got a ferry and reached the island in about ten minutes
The coastline of the small island is a little over 1.5 miles long. Rabbit-shaped ears are present along it.
A solitary hotel welcomes the tourists to the bunny island. As you can see, they are everywhere.
The hotel is well-equipped to deal with the influx of tourists. There are a lot of pictures of rabbits that symbolize the place’s existence.
Visitors are advised to bring as much food for the rabbits as possible especially in the winter days when they virtually live on scraps. You can get to feed them to your heart’s fill. Dogs and cats aren’t allowed on the island as they are both rabbit hunter
Wherever you go, the little furry things will surround you and create a cute scene
If you don’t have food, they will hop away just like that!
The eerie poison gas testing facility that was converted into a museum in 1988. At the entrance of the building, open advice is inscribed:”War is meaningless, and the production of poison gas is tragic. We make an appeal for everlasting peace”. Ah, Japanese, such peace-loving people. I can’t imagine how they did that. I guess wars bring out the worst part of you
The weapons storage facility is in shambles. It was once used to house all kinds of chemical and chemical-bio weapons. Among them was sneezing gas that induced uncontrollable sneezing, vomiting and ultimately death. Such a painful way to die for the poor little rabbits.
Broekart saw more than a hundred rabbits in the tiny island. There are supposedly more than 3000 right now. Lack of food and previous experimentation has supposedly slowed down their multiplication over the years.
Then there are numerous locations that are sealed for the tourists. Poisoned gas is buried there, and we won’t want a leak, would we? The water of the island also remained polluted with Arsenic for a very long time. It has still unacceptable concentration levels in some areas.
Here is the standard attire of the factory workers. Almost 6,500 Japanese used to work at this place.
Tourists are also advised to stay on the main courses. There has been no official decontamination work on this location, so it might be dangerous in some areas.
More than a hundred thousand people visit the reclusive island each year. There are several leisure activities available for tourists here including tennis courts, beaches, and campgrounds. But, I don’t think many people who come here will be interested in these distractions!
